Tater Day
Always the first Monday in April, Benton
just celebrated their 166th Tater Day event. It all started when
local farmers would bring their sweet potatoes and their potato slips to
the court square to sell them. Around 1960, Dr. Robert McCrory
helped start the first Kiwanis Club and organized Tater Day with a
parade, horse races, mule pulls and a carnival. This event has
grown each year. In 2006 the Kiwanis Club sponsored its first
Barbeque Kookoff. We had 13 teams compete. We look forward
to it growing again in 2010. The Benton Kiwanis Club would like
extend an invitation for all to attend the 167th Tater Day celebration.
